Toward the end of the party I managed to get a few moments alone with Ellie, but this was only possible because we were sitting in full view of her parents.
"I'm beginning to hate your bloody Father," I told her.
"Don't be so serious my love. He'll come around to liking you, just give him some time," she replied.
Give him some time! I'd like to give him a good hiding, I thought.
I went home from the party feeling like there was no point to my life. Ellie's Father had it in for me, and I couldn't do a damn thing about it. Why hadn't I been born rich, then everything would have been just great.
He would have welcomed me with open arms if I wasn't a farmer's son!
My poor sick Father. His health was really getting no better, and I was doing even more work than ever. Some nights I never even had time to sneak out and meet Ellie in the woods. Some Romeo I was!
The next time I saw Ellie she was looking a bit down in the mouth. Her Father was threatening to send her abroad for her schooling. If that happened I would only get to see her on school holidays. I couldn't bear the thoughts of that happening.
After returning to the farm the thought of Ellie leaving was driving my crazy, and I decided that I just had to see her Father in the hope that I could talk him out of sending her away.
That night in bed I rehearsed just what I would say, but no matter which approach I thought of they all sounded lame.
I was a farm boy and she was a millionaires daughter. I had no chance of having him change his plans. But there must be something I could do.......................
