Sunlight hit my face burning it slightly before I roused myself out of deep sleep. I dragged myself to the bathroom and saw that I was pale. Anna came to mind, thinking uncharitably that I was about the same colour as she. I rolled my eyes at myself.
"Rude bitch" I mumbled.
Somewhere in the back of my head, I had the memory of the midnight scream, squirreled away and it suddenly leapt to the front.. It was weird it should just pop up like that, but it did and then settled to the back of my head for the rest of the day.
I packed away more stuff, threw out more rubbish and by the end of the day I was done. My flat looked like a home as a small knock came at the door, I checked my watch: 11:52pm.. what the fuck? I realised it would have to be Anna.
Opening the door there she stood with a bottle of wine and 2 glasses.
"Time for celebrates?
"Wow, you're a night owl huh?" pushing the door open for her.
I had to admit, Anna's timing for bringing goodies was pretty near perfect so far. When hungry, she's there with pizza, now I'm done unpacking, here she is with booze. Who could want a better floor-mate?
She poured us both a drink, but I held off drinking it. She didn't seem to notice.
"Well.. I guess welcome to the building. I don't think I said that before did I?"
Anna smiled, I did as well.
"Better late than never I suppose"
I raised my glass and watch her drink hers. I put my glass down and kept smiling.
"So, what do you do for work Anna? You were right about the late hours"
Anna's eyes clouded over a little.
"Waitress. Local pub. Yah, kinda feel a bit like a vampire, sleep through the day, up at night. Do you work?"
"Uni, studying accounting."
"There's a stable job"
We both knew she meant boring, we laughed together.
"Yeah, well turned out I'm good with numbers and at least I know I can get a job anywhere"
"So how much longer do you have?"
"Another year"
"One more year.. and then?"
"Oh.. I suppose I could work... but.."
"You have the lil one to think of yeah?"
I stared at Anna. What the.. how the hell... ??
