The first thing that Leo did when he entered his new bedroom was breathe a sigh of relief. It had felt like so long ago that he had signed the contract back at the landlords even though it had only been hours. Owning a place that was owned partly by him was a dream come true. And it wasn’t very often that they did.
He had spent most of the day bringing in and unpacking boxes of various sizes. They had ranged from enormous ones that held his television and games consoles to smaller ones that held his undergarments and smaller items that were the bare necessities to living in a new home such as a toothbrush, deodorant and a menu for the local pizza delivery service.
Looking in the small mirror above the sink, he brushed his medium length blond hair out of his grey eyes and wiped the sweat from his brow. After what had seemed like an eternity, he was almost finished.
The last box that Leo had left to unpack was a very small one. He hadn’t chosen this one on purpose, but in his mind, it was the biggest and most important box of all. He removed the worn sellotape from the top of it and pulled out an old antique oil lamp. He placed it gently on the bedside table and turned the spout to face the main area of the room.
Its beautiful bronze surface shined in the sunlight. But the appearance of the container wasn’t what Leo loved most about the object. It was the being that lived inside it that he never wanted to be parted from. He lifted the lid and looked inside.
“You in there honey?” he whispered.
Almost immediately, smoke began to pour out of the spout. Carefully replacing the top back in its place, Leo turned around and saw the vaporous substance form into his beautiful boyfriend. The man looked around the room and eventually, his eyes came back to the only mortal he had ever loved, or ever would.
“Do you like it?” Leo asked.
The man smiled a wide smile, causing his brown curled hair to shake slightly at the sides of his head. His amber eyes were filled with the kind of warmth you would see in a fireplace on a cold winters night when the fire is roaring in the grate.
“It’s beautiful. Just like you” his handsome lover replied, and before Leo could get the chance, he walked over to him and gave him a gentle kiss on the lips. Leo returned the expression and when they pulled apart, the man sat down on the end of the newly made bed. He normally wore lightweight jeans and a loose t-shirt, but today he was dressed in the kind of clothes you would expect to see on a harem attendant.
On anyone else, it would have looked strange, but Leo knew better. His boyfriend was a genie and had been for thousands of years. Contrary to most people’s beliefs, they weren’t bound to their prisons. The object they lived in was their home and if they desired to, they could create a portal to their home world within it.
When Leo had first met him, his boyfriend’s name had been Jahmi, but he decided to change it to its anglicised form Jamie because he felt that it made him sound too old. Just because he was that old didn’t mean he had to sound like he was.
Jamie had originally lived in the court of a sultan in the Middle East, but a wicked vizier had sealed him inside his lamp because he felt that his magic could be a threat to society. Thankfully for the genie, Leo had discovered his lamp whilst cleaning out the unwanted stock at a car boot sale. When he polished the vessel, the curse was lifted and he was so grateful to him that he had offered his eternal voluntary service.
Leo refused the gift and after a while, the two became good friends. Until the night that Damone, Leo’s ex-boyfriend tried to get him back. It would have been an easy task, had it not been for the fact that his ex had become a vampire hell bent on draining him and making him his husband in the eyes of his coven.
The beautiful genie had come to his rescue and in the heat of the moment, Leo admitted his love for him. Jamie had been taken aback by his declaration at first but when the two kissed for the first time, he knew in that moment he could not live without his beautiful saviour. And before they knew it, they had become a perfectly normal couple. Albeit the fact that one was human and one wasn’t.
Leo smiled widely as he looked at his lover in his exotic clothing.
“What’s with the traditional get up?” he said.
“Just come from work. Haven’t had time to get changed”
“You can change clothes in the blink of an eye and you didn’t have time?”
Leo wasn’t angry. In fact he was laughing. Jamie spat out his tongue and with a clap of his perfect hands, he was dressed in a jean t-shirt combo once again.
“Better?” he said, half sulking.
His lover took his hand and smiled.
“Almost” he said softly.
In a split second, the two men were joined together by the lips and wrapped in each others arms. Leo pushed Jamie back and the two men lay on the bed.
“Shall I do the honours?” Jamie said.
Leo growled with lust.
“Do please” he whispered, licking his lover’s ear.
Jamie clapped his hands and the two men were naked as the day they were born. Holding each other close, they christened the new sheets as the evening sun broke through the curtains. It may not have been a classy way to start a new life, but they didn’t care one bit.
