Chapter 10
Kali
Nicholas went back to his house and I was left with my father. And yes, he was very angry with me. “I thought I told you never to see him again.” he roared. “He only wants you for one reason and one reason alone.” I stomped inside the house. My father came in behind me and slammed the door. “You are never to see him again. Do you understand me?”
“No.” I turned on him. “I don’t understand.” I sucked in a deep breath. “I will keep seeing him and you can’t stop me.”
My fathers face was as red as a tomato. He ground his teeth together. “Don’t you talk back to me young lady.”
Granddad came in. “What’s going on?” he asked calmly.
Dad pointed to me. “She is seeing a man way to old for her. I told her to stay away from him and she disobeyed me.” Granddad looked at me. Disappointment in his eyes. Dad turned back to me. “You are grounded for the rest of your life.”
“That won’t stop me.” Dad was about to yell again but I cut him off. “I love him!” that made him stop in his tracks.
“You what?”
“I love him.” I said sternly.
“Your to young to know what love is.”
“No I’m not. And he loves me to. And we will keep seeing each other.” I raised my chin high. I would stand by my words. Even if they killed me. My dad stood there speechless. “What’s the matter dad? Can’t handle the truth? Can’t you handle that I’m growing up? That I want more, something I shouldn’t?” he didn’t say anything. “Answer me!”
“No, I can’t handle this. If your mother were here she’d know how to handle you. I don’t know how to control you women.”
“We’re not supposed to be controlled.” I muttered. When he didn’t say anything I stomped up the stairs. I was surprised to see that Nicholas hadn’t been waiting for me. I opened the window and stared out the window. “Nicholas?” I called quietly. He didn’t come.
“Oh what a shame.” I turned abruptly to see Hannah standing by the door. “Your lover boy is, shall we say, a little tied up.” she giggled. I took a step back. “Now we can be all alone. I’ve gotten rather hungry.” her fangs extended. I screamed. I heard footsteps outside the door. My dad threw open the door. He saw her fangs and looked confused. “I guess I’ll have to kill him too.” she let out a high pitch laugh.
Nicholas came in through the window. “You.” he growled extending his fangs. My dad stepped back. Nicholas lunged at Hannah. She stepped out of the way and he crashed into the desk. She came behind me and placed her hand on my throat.
“Move and I’ll kill her.” Nicholas stopped dead in his tracks. His stare moved from Hannah to me then back again. A growl rumbled through his chest. I trembled. Hannah squeezed my neck and I let out a gasp.
“What do you want?” Nicholas asked through clenched teeth.
“Blood. As always.”
“Why hers?”
“I love to put you through misery. Honesty Nicky, I thought you would have figured that out by now. I’ve been waiting over a month to make my move.” She smelled me. “Tell me, Nicky. How does she taste? Sweet?” she flicked her tongue across my cheek.
Nicholas let out an angry snarl. Before I knew what happened I was thrown at the wall while Nicholas and Hannah were fighting. There were snarls, growls, and cries of pain. Nicholas got kicked into the wall and Hannah gave me a nasty look before jumping out the window.
Nicholas chased after her. I went over to the window to see that they had already disappeared. I hope Nicholas will be alright. I hope he can take care of himself. Scared tears started rolling down my cheeks.
“What’s going on?” dad asked coming to stand behind me. “Was that a vampire?” I nodded not trusting my voice at the moment. I was to worried about what was going on between them. “Tell me what’s happening?” he ordered. I licked my lips and started to explain.
“Nicholas is a vampire. And the woman he’s fighting is a vampire. It’s illegal for humans to know so now she’s pissed and wants to kill me. Nicholas has been protecting me. He doesn’t want me to get hurt.” My voice cracked.
“You’ve been dating a vampire?”
“That’s why he comes out at sunset.” I whispered. “You think he still doesn’t love me?” I asked turning to him. He seemed to be in a state of shock. “He does.”
“But, a vampire?”
“Yes dad. A vampire.” I sat on the foot of my bed waiting for something to happen. Waiting for Nicholas to come back. “By the way,” I added. “Nicolas is not actually twenty three.” Dad looked up confused. “He’s twenty seven. And he’s not a mechanic.”
“Then what does he do?”
“Hang out with me. He’s a vampire. He can have anything he wants. He doesn’t have to work.”
“And the thing he wants is my daughter.” He shook his head. “I can’t accept this.” We sat in silence for three hours. All of a sudden Nicholas appeared on the window sill. His breathing was heavy.
“I lost her.” He sat next to me. “I can’t run anymore. I’m tired. The sun will come up in an hour.” In a total of ten seconds of being here he was asleep.
“Nicholas.” I slapped him on the stomach.
“Is it nighttime already?” He did look exhausted.
“No. I want you to tell me what happened.”
“I ran. For three hours. Non-stop. I need a break.”
“How can you sleep at a time like this?”
“Kali, baby. Lets list what I’ve done tonight. I ran through the woods looking for you. Then I ran three hours looking for that wench. And I barely eaten anything.” he listed off on his fingers. “And your asking how I can sleep?” He stood up. He looked unsteady. “I’ll see you later.” he jumped out the window and was gone.
