Chapter 22
When I opened my eyes overhead neon lights tore into my brain like ten thousand needles. I was disoriented, unsure of where I was. I became aware of the tubing attached to my nose and the gentle flow of air. Slowly raising my left hand to remove the tubing, I saw that my arm and hand were bandaged. I stared in disbelief. What on earth had I done? Then I saw the IV needle inserted into the back of my hand and taped to the bandages. Suddenly the flood gate opened and the events of a few minutes ago?, hours ago?, days ago?....'Oh Dear God!' I thought to myself, 'I have to find Ryan.'
"He's awake." It was Lynda's voice.
I placed my hands on the bed to raise myself up. BIG mistake!
Screaming, I fell back on to the bed, sweat immediately beading up on my forehead. Suddenly my mom and Sean were by my side. "Just lie still bud," Sean said as he grabbed a tissue from the box by my bed and wiped my face.
"I'll be right back," I heard Ethan say. He stopped at the foot of my bed and lightly shook my foot. "Hey you," he grinned at me. Then he was gone.
Lynda and Deborah stepped to the bed. Sean stepped back allowing the girls to move to the head of the bed. Both reached down and lightly kissed my cheek.
"I love you Col-O," Lynda said, using her personal nickname for me.
Deborah took her hand and moved my hair away from my face. "I love you too. It's all going to be okay." One look into her blue eyes told me she no more believed that than I did.
"Ryan," I began.
"He's being taken care of." my mom said.
"How is..."
Ethan stepped back into the room, interrupting me as he did. "I was looking for a nurse, but this was all I could find."
"I heard that!" Ethan stepped aside as Olivia Owens slapped him on the arm. "Keep it up and, next to you, Colin will look like he fell off of a tricycle!"
Olivia stepped to the right side of my bed, gently placing her hand on my shoulder. "How are you feeling Colin?"
"Olivia, where's Ryan. Is he okay. What is going on? They won't tell me anything. Please? Please tell me. I want the truth." I felt the tears sting my eyes and begin to fall down my cheeks.
Taking a deep breath, Olivia looked at my mom and the others. "Will you all please give me a few minutes alone with him?"
My family nodded, each one touching my shoulder or foot as they left the room, each one telling me "I love you."
I noticed my mom had tears on her cheeks as she left the room, pulling the door closed behind her.
Pulling a chair to the side of the bed, Olivia took a seat.
"I want the truth. Please Olivia. What is going on? Where am I? Where the hell is Ryan? Why won't anyone say anything?"
Olivia very gently took my left hand in both of hers.
"First of all, you're in an exam room. In the Emergency Department. What do you remember of what happened?"
I could feel the sweat begin to pour from my forehead, my heart begin to race as the movie in my mind began to try and take focus.
"We were at work. I saw Ryan falling." I stopped as my brain tried to piece things together. "They wre taking Ryan to an ambulance. My mom coming in...after that..." I shook my head.
"You don't remember running through the glass doors to get to Ryan?"
I shook my head.
"Do you remember running down to the dock, being there with him till the EMT's got there?"
"No." My eyes pleaded with hers for the truth.
Olivia's big brown eyes welled with tears.
In the waiting room my mom, Lynda and Deborah were sitting talking to Daivid, Dianne and Michael.
"I just had a call from Tim a few minutes ago," Dianne was saying, "He called to check on Colin. Everyone there is praying for you all. He wanted me to let you all know that everyone there said that if you all need anything, anything at all, please let one of us know."
"We will. Please thank everyone for us. For everything. I want to thank you three again, and let Tim and Josh know as well. I know you all did everything you could."
Sean, Ethan and Father Andrew walked into the waiting area, hands filled with coffee cups.
As they passed the cups around, Andrew stepped to where my mom was sitting, and knelt down in front of her. Handing her a cup of coffee, he placed his own on the small table beside her chair. He took her free hand in both of his.
"Mrs. O'Banyon, if there is anything that I can do for you, or for Colin, please, please let me know. I will be here as long as either of you needs me..."
My screams could be heard all through the hospital.
People throughout the building stopped to look in the direction the screams seemed to be echoing from.
A clerk at the admitting desk jumped to his feet as one of the ER nurses flew around the corner and started down the hall to the room.
Back in the waiting room, my family froze. Mom's coffee cup slipped from her hand, hot coffee spilling all over Andrew, who let out a gasp.
Tears began to flow down her face as my mom closed her eyes and whispered, "Oh Dear God...she's told him."
